Bring your lunch and come to New Bedford Art Museum/Artworks during February break.
Learn about cool art and make paintings, drawings, prints, collages, and clay sculptures! We will practice yoga and breathing exercises to help you focus your attention and maximize your creativity. Have fun with your friends and bring home beautiful art works for your family.

Printmaking/Bookmaking

Cricut Cut Screen Printing Class
Saturdays: March 11th - April 1st, 2023

Ages: 18+

This 4-week class will introduce the silk screening process using a Cricut die-cutting machine. Students will learn basic planographic printmaking skills and explore materials, layering, and color mixing. This workshop will use vinyl to create a stencil on a silk screen.

Students will learn to design images that will be converted into the Cricut Workspace. Screens will be printed using acrylic ink with a squeegee on the material of student provided choices. Class Maximum: 12 students.

Katrina Emily Benner is an artist and designer from Southeastern Massachusetts. She received a BFA in Printmaking with honors from Rhode Island School of Design in 2019 and MFA in Printmaking from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth CVPA in 2022. Katrina has been the recipient of numerous awards; including the 75th Boston Printmakers Book Award, Corporal Kristina Paglio Commitment to Service Award (RISD), and the John A. Chironna Memorial Scholarship Award for Printmaking (RISD).

Intro to Relief Printmaking

In this introductory 4 week class, you will learn about various relief printing processes. Topics include, soft linoleum carving, hand-and-press printing, multi-block prints, and chine-colle techniques. All materials included. Class maximum: 12 participants.

Born in Southeast Texas, Taylor earned her BA in Drawing and Printmaking from McNeese State University and went on to earn an MFA in Printmaking from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in 2021. She developed a body of work which pays homage to the human endeavor to understand the universe at large.

In this 4 week introductory class, students will learn how to create your very own tapestry piece through the art of weaving. Students will learn techniques to achieve various textures within their project. This medium is great for beginners who are not quite ready for weaving looms but want to experiment with color and form. Class maximum: 12 students.

Tania Vasconcelos is an artist from Southeastern Massachusetts. She graduated from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth with a BFA in Textile and Fiber Arts in May 2022. Tania has also worked as an artMOBILE educator for the Art Museum.

Shibori Dyeing Workshop

This one-day, 3 hour workshop, will introduce students to the world of resist dyeing in the form of Japanese Shibori. This technique can be dated back to the 5th century and is traditionally dyed with Indigo. Students will learn different methods of Shibori and basic fabric dyeing. All materials are included. Class maximum: 12 students

Introduction to Artistic Needle Felting

In this 4 week course you will learn the basics of needle felting, it's science and it's history. This contemporary fiber art has ties to both the textile industry and to Massachusetts itself! Students will learn how to plan and create 3 dimensional woolen sculptures, and felted 'paintings' using little more than a single needle. This is a perfect course for crafters and fine artist alike! All materials included. Class maximum: 12 students.

Two sessions available. Those that wish to develop their skills even further than the 4 week introductory course are encouraged to enroll in the second session, where they will be able to continue with expanded projects.

"Rage Squares" Workshop

The project, as envisioned by textile artist Agusta Agustsson, is to make a large, crowd-sourced community quilt to support women’s health and reproductive rights. Participants can voice their support through a signature, slogan, or quote. "Individual squares show our RAGE. The project, like that in the larger world, is ongoing."

No sewing skills are required. Participants may bring fabric that is meaningful and think about a phrase or sentence to convey in the square. A sewing machine and materials will be provided. Finished squares can be taken or donated. This workshop is free with a limit of 30 participants. Pre-registration guarantees admittance.

 

Agusta Agustsson began making quilts as a painting major at Massachusetts College of Art. Concurrently, at the Graphic Workshop, she created silkscreened posters which received local, national, and international recognition. Many of her pastel landscapes can be found in corporate collections. She worked as an art teacher for 22 years. The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston acquired one of her quilts in 2017. Her work has been included in the Museum’s recent publication "Fabric of a Nation," a contribution to textile arts history that documents 400 years of quilting in America.

Acrylic Unleashed

"Acrylic Unleashed" is a painting course designed for those interested in exploring the versatility of acrylic paint and mixed media artwork. This four-week course, led by local artist and instructor Devin "Nived Art" McLaughlin, is open to motivated teens and adults of any experience level. Whether you're a beginner, a seasoned painter, or just looking for a new way to express yourself, this class has something for everyone!

Throughout the course, students will learn how to hone their skills with traditional processes and dive headlong into unconventional abstract tactics. Devin uses a combination of live demonstration and hands-on exercises to help students learn a variety of artistic techniques. By understanding colors, creating textures, and experimenting with an array of materials, students will discover their own unique styles and gain the ability to effectively communicate through their art.

The course will cover a range of techniques, including layering, blending, and working with different tools, such as palette knives and acrylic mediums. Students will learn how to create depth and movement in their compositions. Through individualized instruction and personal feedback each student is encouraged to explore and push the boundaries of their craft.

By the end of the course, students will have completed several pieces of artwork and will have the skills and confidence to continue creating on their own.

Ashley Jeneé Collins is currently a post baccalaureate ceramics student at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Ashley's professional experiences have included: management of a private ceramic studio, and production of product photography for a small non-profit social enterprise. Through Ashley's fourteen years of ceramic experience, she has assisted in throwing demonstrations for undergraduates, worked with at-risk youth to express themselves through clay projects and personalized stepping stones, and assisted in a community school ceramics classes.

In this 4-week introduction class, learn about the basics of pottery making! Students will learn proper technique and form on a pottery wheel to create functional vessels. Students will glaze and seal their work and the Art Museum will fire final pieces. All materials are included. Class maximum: 8 students.
