Their Last Port (The Rousseau and Desdamonia)
Copper etching, 1888
Collection of the New Bedford Free Public Library, 2010.3.16
The two ships in this painting remained laid up at port for seven years, and their aging hulls became something of a romantic symbol of the decline of the whaling industry. When the Rousseau was broken up in 1893 this frame was created from its timbers.

The Home Port (The Niger Refitting)
Copper etching, 1906
Collection of the New Bedford Free Public Library, 2010.3.18
This print shows the whale ship Niger refitting at a dock at the foot of Rodman Street in New Bedford. At the left there is an old boat house with the proprietor, Peter Nelson, sitting in the doorway. According to the Fairhaven Star, “It appeals to the sentiment of those familiar with the past whaling industry and is a picture that will be of considerable historic value as years pass by” (May 26, 1906).
