The New Bedford Art Museum/Artworks! is happy to announce our Summer 2021 Youth Summer Art Classes! Clay and Drawing/Painting classes will be offered in-person and outdoors at Our Sisters’ School campus located at 145 Brownell Ave, New Bedford, MA 02740. A special thank you to OSS for allowing us to utilize their outdoor space!

Class Descriptions

Just Claying Around
Ages 6-13
Come explore the basics of clay art-making with NBAM! Students will acquire skills in creating pinch pots, coiling, slab building, and wheel-thrown creations using a pottery wheel. Students will complete their pieces with glazing and our clay instructor will fire them in a kiln. We will explore different themes per week including animals, nature, space, fantasy, and more! All materials are included in the class. Classes are adapted for students ages 6-10 and 11-13. So “clay” for a while and create some fun art!
Luck of the Draw
Ages 6-13
Come explore the basics of drawing and painting with NBAM! Students will acquire skills in observational drawing and painting, comics and cartoons, landscapes and nature, portraits, and more! This class is designed for students wanting to explore various drawing and painting mediums. All materials are included in the class. Classes are adapted for students ages 6-10 and 11-13. Try your best and open your mind to all artistic possibilities. “Paint” no mountain high enough!

Cost each week:
Museum members – $450.00 per youth
Non-museum members – $500.00 per youth

Class Descriptions

We Can Be Heroes: Comics, Cartoons, and Manga – Virtual
Ages 11-14
Explore how artwork and storytelling come together in the form of Comics, Cartoons, and Manga. Develop a comic strip, learn about Japanese comics and Manga style, learn how to draw a variety of facial expressions, animate objects, and create thumbnail sketches that go from concept to storyboard. This class meets virtually with real-time instruction from our art educator. So get in “toon” with your creative side and make some cool art!
*Art kits with materials needed for the class will be ready for pick up the weekend before the start of class(Friday, July 16 – Sunday, July 18, 10:00 AM-4:00 PM). 
Lights, Camera, Action!: Costume Design – Hybrid
Ages 11-14
Have you ever wondered how costumes for movies and tv are made? In this class, learn about the process of costume designing. We will cover color theory, concept development, mood board assemblage, how to gesture-draw people and clothing, basic sewing, and conventional/unconventional materials to create garments. The class will meet virtually for the week. For those that are able to attend, and an in-person field trip to the New Bedford Art Museum/Artworks! is included on Monday, July 26 from 9:00 AM-10:00 AM. The field trip will also be live-streamed. Students will view our current costume design exhibit, Uncommon Threads: The Work of Ruth E. Carter.
*Art kits with materials needed for the class will be ready for pick up the weekend before the start of class (Friday, July 23 – Sunday, July 25, 10:00 AM-4:00 PM). In the words of Ruth, “you’re smart, you’re beautiful, you’re intelligent, you’re creative.” So don’t be “clothes” minded; think outside the box and let’s get started!
