Morocco, Seen Closely: Photographs by Laurie Bullard

November 5 - February 7, 2027

In this exhibition, Laurie Bullard shares photographs from her journey through Morocco, moving from the patterned tilework, pottery, and busy tanneries of its cities to the sweeping dunes of the Sahara. Musicians, grazing goats, and intricate architecture bring moments of life into her study of place. Drawn to natural light, color, and texture, Bullard invites us to pause and discover the details that caught her eye.

I have been taking photographs from a very early age, starting with my Brownie Camera. I would set up "little still life scenes" and photograph them! In 2005, I bought my first digital camera and shot only black-and-white photographs, focusing on textures, shapes, shadows, and contrasts. I printed many of those black-and-white prints myself. Several years later I added color. I have taken several photography courses and workshops, including a 2005 National Geographic workshop in Santa Fe taught by veteran NG photographer Robb Kendrick, and, most recently, a 2025 National Geographic photography workshop in Morocco with renowned photographer Karine Aigner. I was a member of Gallery 65 in New Bedford until it closed, and I had the honor of showing at the Dedee Shattuck Gallery. I have been published in Duck's Unlimited Annual Sportsmen's Report and Flying Your Way, an in-flight magazine of Air New England. Throughout the 80's, I was the featured photographer for the Waterfront Historic Area League's "New Bedford Sightings" section of the Sounding newsletters. I was the faculty advisor for the Friends Academy's annual yearbook.

Additionally, I have participated in several local juried shows. I have photographed and donated my work for special events including the Buzzards Bay Coalition swim, the Women's Fund, and the New Bedford Community Rowing Center. I have photographed retriever dogs for a special dog show, and have done portraits of individuals and families. My photographs hang in several private homes.

I concentrate primarily on natural light and photograph whatever catches my eye. Details I find especially interesting include textural surfaces, shadows, grasses, fire escapes, buildings, ladders, bicycles, boats of all kinds and conditions, chairs, close-ups of flowers, fences, plants, trees, birds, wild animals and, of course, my family; kids and grandkids, assorted family animals, and even engraved manhole covers and other metal works. I rarely photograph landscapes and people. The exception is when I travel outside the US. I view many of our trips as a story that needs to be told, and thus break with my own preferences by photographing cities, landscapes, and people. Rarely do I find the need to manipulate any of my photographs, something I have admired about the NG photographers. I have been inspired by many well-known photographers, including Ansel Adams, but especially by renowned photographer Frederick Evans, who remarked in 1908, “a perfect photograph is one that perfectly records, reflects its subject; gives its beholder the same order of joy that the original would”. I have always liked this quote, have been influenced by it, and ask the viewer to pause a moment to look, see the details, and thus feel joy.

A Note: I have always been intrigued by Morocco and was thrilled when John and I spent 12 days there a year ago. The highlights included Casablanca, Marrakech, the High Atlas Mountains, camping in the Sahara Desert and traveling by Dromedary, the single-humped camel, and finally Fez. It was a feast for my eyes! I hope my photographs selected here at the New Bedford Art Museum give you a sense of this amazing and beautiful country.
