Winter Break Art Program: Season of Making

Spark creativity this Winter Break at the New Bedford Art Museum! Season of Making is a weeklong art program that invites young artists to spend their school vacation exploring creativity, imagination, and self-expression through hands-on art making.

Students will experiment with a wide range of materials and techniques while creating artwork they’ll be proud to bring home and share. Each day begins with engaging prompts and guided lessons led by the Museum’s professional teaching artists, followed by open studio exploration, creative games, and collaborative group activities.

Participants will build confidence, make new friends, and strengthen their artistic skills in a warm, welcoming environment designed to encourage curiosity, creative growth, and meaningful artistic experiences throughout Winter Break.

Spring Break Program Daily Themes

Monday: Museum After Hours
Kick off the week with an exclusive exploration of the New Bedford Art Museum! Students will complete a creative museum scavenger hunt, sketch inspiration from artwork throughout the galleries, and transform their discoveries into original characters and colorful canvas paintings.

Tuesday: Pottery & Patterns in Motion
Clay takes center stage! Students will get hands-on with pottery through an exciting wheel throwing session, exploring shape, form, and movement. They’ll continue the day with creative projects inspired by pattern, repetition, and rhythm.

Wednesday: Splash Art Day
Get ready to make a mess! Students will experiment with splatter painting, dripping, color mixing, bold brushwork, and other playful techniques to create energetic artwork filled with movement and personality.

Thursday: Clay Day
Back to the pottery studio! Students will enjoy a second wheel throwing session, giving them the opportunity to build on what they learned Tuesday. They’ll also explore clay through hands-on projects focused on texture, form, and three-dimensional design.

Friday: Library Adventure & Stories Brought to Life
We’ll wrap up the week with a walking field trip to the New Bedford Free Public Library, where students will explore books, illustrations, graphic novels, and visual storytelling through a creative scavenger hunt. Back at the Museum, they’ll use that inspiration to create a three-dimensional book cover shadow box starring one of their own original characters.
