6-8pm
Free Concert For All

Folk, soul, pop, electronica, rock, hip-hop, and jazz, are just some of the genres you might hear at any given FriYAY event. Curated by Scott Bishop, a New Bedford-based singer, songwriter, and sound sculptor, visitors hear local musicians play a two-hour set.

Upcoming: Ana Vinagre

Ana Vinagre is one of the area’s most beloved fadistas.

Born in Buarcos, Portugal, Vinagre began singing fado at the age of 13 as a member of her hometown folk dance group Cantarinhas de Buarcos. For several years, she toured extensively with this group throughout Europe, until immigrating to the United States in the 1970s with her husband José.

At the insistence of some friends, Vinagre began to perform the New England circuit of Portuguese restaurants and social clubs, singing fado. Today, she is one of the area’s best-known and most respected fadista. She has made appearances at the National Folk Festival, the Northwest Folklife Festival, and the Lowell Folk Festival, among others

This program is supported in part by a grant from the New Bedford Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
